LGBTQ+ Issues
Pretty much every major and well-respected medical and psychological organization in the world affirms the reality of gay, bisexual, trans, and non-binary identities. We can also study the cultures of the world throughout history and learn that these identities have existed in some form since as long as humans have been around. Most of our ideas of what is “natural” comes from culture and upbringing, not from science. Sex and gender are very complex, fluid things, and the medical community has understood this for decades. Basic research details these facts, but in my experience people who are anti-LGBTQ are generally motivated by fear, hate, and/or ignorance, and not by science or the facts. It’s similar to trying to convince a flat-earther than the world is indeed round.
Even outside of this however, my goal is to life a live of compassion and understanding. So when someone tells me something about their identity and how they feel about themselves, my initial reaction is to show support and try to understand what they are trying to say. It’s hard to ignore the fact that most of the time people criticize LGBTQ+ activism, especially with regard to trans people, they do so with such obvious malice and vitriol. So this is a hard topic to talk about because it’s so obvious that people don’t really want to have a real conversation, they just want to be hateful. If you’re not starting from a place of compassion, then you and I will never see eye to eye.
Ultimately, I fully support the LGBTQ+ community and advocate for them to be treated with respect and with the same dignity and opportunity as anyone else. Just like anyone else, this community is made up of human beings, sometimes they are nice, sometimes they aren’t, sometimes they say good things, sometimes they say bad things. This applies to everyone, but it doesn’t change the fact that we are all humans and we are all valid and deserve to be treated with dignity.
